music review: the GazettE – TRACES VOL.2

March 12, 2017 Leave a comment

In this album, we have the band’s best ballad songs compiled here. At first, I thought this was just another cash grab for the band with no changes to the songs whatsoever but I was wrong. Thank goodness.

My first impressions have been pretty decent. Every song here is rerecorded with some added arrangements and lyrics. Also, every song does not fade out except for ITO. Long time fans of the GazettE will appreciate this album because it’s got oldie songs such as Kare Uta, Reila, D.L.N., and Taion. All the songs here are great.

Now for the bad. This could be a hit or miss with the new recorded sound. It sounds very compressed and thick where as the original has a more balanced sound mixing. This may be because I’m used to the way the original sounded but your mileage may vary. While I love the emphasis put into the drums, it sounds artificial here. Come to think of it, this production is quite similar to Dir en grey’s THE UNRAVELING. My favorite GazettE ballad is PLEDGE, and to hear that the song butchered here was quite disappointing. Ruki’s voice no longer has that emotional impact that was in the original. The same result happened when I heard Dir en grey’s rerecorded version of THE FINAL. Guren has these children giggling in the background which is kinda creepy. I really miss the piano standout that was in Reila.

I think of this album as another option or a 2nd chance for those who didn’t like the way the original sounded. Either way, it gave me a good reason to listen to the oldie tracks again. Without a doubt, the new Kare Uta will be on my phone.

music review: lynch – AVANTGARDE

September 18, 2016 Leave a comment

It’s become clear to me that every album lynch releases, they move up the ranks of my top favorite bands. They’re now ranked 5th on my list. One of the things I love about their discography is that all of their song titles are in English. That alone saves me time of retagging their tracks from kanji to romaji. AVANTGARDE is an improvement from their previous work, D.A.R.K.-In the Name of Evil-. The typical lynch fashion of alternative metal with more oomph. More memorable songs here, however there are still filler tracks throughout. If I had to pick a favorite song here, that would be UNELMA. It’s got the same song writing characteristic from abingdon boys school and the style from the GazettE making this a very easy song to get into.

Highlights: UNELMA, PHANTOM, F.A.K.E.

Song of the Day: Lynch. – OBLIVION (+mini review)

My favorite track of GALLOWS. The overall album is pretty good, sort like a continuation of EXODUS. Though I would have preferred a EP instead of a full length album so they can pour out memorable quality songs rather than make mediocre ones for the sake of putting out more. Some may complain about the sound production for being too high on its treble and bass equalizer. I didn’t have much of a problem with it so your mileage may vary.

music review: girugamesh – LIVE BEST

Wow. This has got to be the best album girugamesh has released since their self-titled album. Nearly every track is an improvement, even the ones I didn’t like actually sounds appealing. It’s easy to tell all the band members had fun recording this. It’s great to hear Volcano in a newly recorded format because that song desperately needed it considering how awesome it is. I really like the addition of the double bass drums in CRAZY-FLAG and SHADAN. For heavy songs like them, it felt most appropriate. I guess Ryo did improve his drumming a little. I didn’t hear much of a difference on ZANTETSUKEN but then again, I haven’t listened to much of giru’s recent stuff enough. But wow, overall this is great release. I honestly thought these were songs were recorded from their concerts but after hearing the preview, I was dead on excited.
