anime review: Chihayafuru 2, Aku no Hana

Chihayafuru 2

Compared to season 1, this is really disappointing. The pacing is completely cluttered and loves to torture audience with fillerish side dishes. More than half the show has been focused on a single karuta event. If this season had the direction of the first, things would be balanced and consistent. Some of the first season soundtrack has been reused in this one but the newer tracks from this season are terrible. I’m glad to see more of Arata and the Queen. There were also some golden moments with Chihaya like when she gets her opponent’s name wrong. The recap episode here is completely uninformative and a snore fest. This is still worth the watch if you’ve enjoyed season 1.

Aku no Hana

Who did not see this coming? At the rate it was going, there was no way for this 13 episode anime to cover 33 chapters worth of material. The final episode went with its usual pacing then when the 2nd half came in, it suddenly flash forwards to all the future event that happens in the manga like a bullet train. Never mind the visuals, I rather have a proper ending than good animation. I’m so glad the manga is still ongoing.
