Impressions So Far: Spring Anime 2013

Aku no Hana (Flower of Evil)

It’s too ugly. So much that it’s actually quite fitting considering how ugly the story will progress. Still, I would’ve preferred a live action drama rather than animation of this style. I’m curious to know how they’re gonna cover 30+ chapters worth of material in a mere 13 episodes.

Arata Kangatari (Arata: The Legend)

It’s been a little more than a decade since we’ve seen Yuu Watase’s work adapted into an anime but this disappointing. First off, the visuals are on the cheap which is insulting to Yuu’s lovely art style. It’s even worse than Code Breaker. 2nd, only 12 episodes cutting a majority of the plot. The manga hasn’t had a breakthrough in sales so I’m not gonna expect a 2nd season.

Chihayafuru 2

I really liked the first season, but what the hell happened here? Started off nice, then things slowed down too much midway through. We’ve been in this team tournament arc for 10 eps straight now and it doesn’t help by adding a pointless recap ep. Wasn’t the main focus of show supposed to be character drama? I know karuta has its place but this is degrading the show into a shonen sports anime.

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation

This would be fine for a video game plot but anime? It’s hard to take it seriously. Think of this as pokemon in a post apocalyptic world. It carries cliche aesthetics making it worse to enjoy.

Majestic Prince

A mecha series back to its classic roots. Despite of Hirai’s recycled character designs, this is the most enjoyable show outta the bunch. It’s silly in the good way, the main cast is lovable and their interactions are great, and action scenes make one hell of an impression.

Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part-Timer!)

This is a pleasant surprise. Originally I never planned to watch but the concept immediately caught my attention, Satan working at McDonalds. So far, it’s been consistently solid. However, there’s one vital flaw this show projects. That is making Satan and Lucifer separate characters. Biblicaly speaking, Satan IS Lucifer. My lesson for the creative staff is, please do some research. It’s not that hard, even wikipedia does the job.

Valvrave the Liberator

Honestly. I had no idea what to expect from this show but considering it’s a mecha anime from Sunrise, expect their tropes to be present. So it started off as a Mobile Suit Gundam feel then add in vampires. Since ep5, I have no idea where this show is going. I swear this has some of the most retarded moments I’ve seen in mecha anime that even surpasses the first Gundam series. One man army in ep3, the musical in ep5? Is this supposed to be some kind of self-satire?

Attack on Titan

Stylish and entertaining as hell. Love the soundtrack since it’s by Gundam Unicorn’s composer. On top of that, Mikasa’s a major badass. Being Production IG’s work, I only wish that every scene didn’t take any shortcuts with its animation. Other than that, fairly solid so far.

Suisei no Gargantia (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)

I was very cautious with this show because it was written by the same guy who wrote Fate Zero and Psycho Pass. Fate Zero was above average but Psycho Pass was a massive disappointment. So far, this ain’t not bad. The CG sucks though. The fanservice filler ep could’ve been cut down to half. The whole language translation is just awkward to watch. Why not stick with the alien language? Overall, it’s still pretty interesting to watch.
